The program, the excel, and the text files are now posted. If you're a subscriber you can find the files in the Subscriber menu. If there wasn't a lockout everything would be perfect, but if you see anything else amiss please send us a note or post here.

I took the install file down just now. I have the fix from Eric of the .exe file and Alex should be sending the updated data files, which fix some other smaller issues that cropped up.  I'm sure there will be tweaks necessary here and there, but some time tonight there will be an official release version of the software, Excel sheet, and text files.

You would have to download again, Scott, but we will be posting the fix in a few hours, so you should wait.

Alex, if we download now, do we download again tomorrow to get the correct AL pitcher values? Or is the fix automatic?

We've posted the program in Downloads; there's a problem with AL pitcher values which Eric will fix tonight.

Those of you who have subscribed already, if you have any time this afternoon, please take PDO 2022 for a test drive. Report any problems that you find here.

Tomorrow we'll be Dave Stieb!

Appreciate the offer in the worst case scenario, Alex, but even without a season, there is value in being able to enjoy what you provide, especially while the CBA nonsense goes on and on! So I would never ask for a credit. And you are so correct about the hardy few. I find it increasingly difficult to fill a league vacancy for our longstanding 5x5 12-team NL only league.

There are always bumps in the road as we transfer Peter's projections from Excel to the program and this year is no exception. We are quite confident that we will be able to post the software tomorrow in Downloads.

I alluded yesterday in Local News to the question of what happens here if the season is seriously delayed? Maybe today is a good time to talk about that.

As a practical matter, there is no way to offer a partial refund if only part of the season is played. The situation doesn't seem so dire that the season will be canceled completely, but if it is -- there still won't be a refund.

What I think we'll do, in that dire event, is offer a free subscription in 2023 to those who ask for it. You paid for 2022, you didn't get anything (you did but it wasn't useful), you get 2023 for free, if you ask for it.

We are down to the hardy few here: diehard Roto players, most of whom play in standard 4x4 or 5x5 leagues that acquire players the old-fashioned way, in auctions.

You'd be surprised (or maybe you wouldn't be) how few people are still that hardy.

This is not a growth business and it's barely a business. My point: those of you who pay good money each year to subscribe get your money's worth each year; if you didn't, you wouldn't keep paying. I have fair confidence that you won't take us up on the offer in 2023, if 2022 is wiped out, because you'll want us to stay in business.

Anyway, that's the worst-case scenario. Enough of that.

Tomorrow, for the umpteenth year in a row, Patton $ Online with Rotoman's projections -- his bids, my bids, Mike Fenger's bids, 4x4 values, 5x5 values, expected lineups and rotations, four sets of prospect rankings, and so much more to come (CBS prices, LABR prices, Tout Wars prices), endless notes in Quick Memo, etc etc, not to mention all the things that you enter -- will the available in Downloads!

If not tomorrow, Thursday for sure.

The Evaluator is also available on the downloads page for subscribers.

While you're watching football today, here's what I recommend during the lo-o-ong commercials: sort hitters by position and Patton $ (4x4 or 5x5) and look at the depth of each position.

Sorting NL hitters that way, you'll see these three hitters at the top of the list.

M Keller -1

J Realmuto 23

Will Smith 20

Mitch Keller is a mistake; somehow a pitcher slipped in among the hitters. We'll fix that.

Realmuto and Will Smith are the only catchers in the NL who earned $20 or more last year. (And that's in 4x4; Smith drops down to $19 in 5x5.)

A grand total of eight catchers earned double digits in 4x4.

In standard NL-onlies, we need 24 catchers. The 24th-best catcher last year earned $2.

That includes people like Kiebert Ruiz and Nick Fortes, who weren't even available on draft day.

Serious, serious position scarcity, as always, among catchers.

List just the second base position, using the same double sort.

Top three: Albies $36, Edman $30, Chisolm $25.

No. 16-18: Kelenic $6, Difo $6, La Stella $5.

Kelenic? Jarred Kelenic? The Seattle rookie outfielder?

That's another mistake.

I put together the spreadsheet that goes into the Evaluator. It's on me.

So forget Kelenic. The 18th-best second baseman in the NL last year was Josh VanMeter, who also earned $5.

You'll see that VanMeter aslo qualifies at third base (played 25 games), but he's only listed once, because the most important thing the Evaluator does is show depth at position.

List NL shortstops.

The top three earn $51, $45 and $33.

No. 16-18 earn $8, $7 and $6.

Many players qualify at short and second, of course; you can easily change the  primary position in the player's data box and get a different view of position depth.

If your shortstop requirement is amply met by the fact that you plan to freeze Trea Turner, for example, and Javier Baez is available in your league, you want to switch Javier to second.

I'm getting ahead of myself. That's the sort of thing you'll do in the Projector as you get ready for your draft.

Today, my advice is, download the Evaluator.

It has some mistakes in it. Don't be shy about reporting any that you find. That's one reason why we're posting it now for free.

We don't want any mistakes in either the Evaluator or the Projector on Feb. 14, when we put the entire program up for sale on Feb. 14.

Now... did Jarred Kelenic really earn $6 last year, batting .181?

Hard to believe, isn't it? But he did hit 14 homers and steal 6 bases.

If he in fact played in the NL and qualified at second base, you wanted him on your team.

Most likely.
