The two biggest Yankee goats came through last night.

Dan Martin describes the action in the New York Post:

Just like everything else this season, it didn’t come easily for the Yankees, but they outlasted the Rangers, 7-3, on Wednesday night in The Bronx, putting themselves back in the playoff picture.

Thanks to Toronto’s loss to Tampa Bay, the Yankees moved back into the second AL wild-card spot by half a game.

The three-game sweep of Texas sets up a wild end of the regular season. The Yankees have Thursday off, followed by nine games against the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Rays...

After falling behind by three runs thanks to some poor defense and a lack of timely hitting, the Yankees stormed back with seven unanswered runs, taking the lead on Gleyber Torres’ RBI double that drove in Joey Gallo with two outs in the eighth inning.

Torres then hustled home from second for an insurance run when Texas second baseman Yonny Hernandez fumbled a Gio Urshela grounder. Gary Sanchez put the game away with a two-run home run.

They won though they went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position earlier in the game and seemed determined to let the last-place Rangers escape with a win.

If Gleyber hits at 2B next year and you get him to qualify at SS, that's even better. He couldn't hit at SS two years in a row after crushing at 2B.  Was his internal dialog about his defense that much of a distraction?  We will soon find out.

Another boot last night.  They're playing Urshela and Lemahieu out of position for this?  For .252/.324/.350?

Time is short.  Wade's my SS the next two weeks and Gio and DJ go back where they are defensive assets.

Gleyber---that's a 2022 problem.

He was activated by the Yankees for tonight's game.  I traded for him for next year. I hope he can rebound. $15 in the last year of an extension.

Gleyber Torres (SS) NY-A - Sep. 02

Torres (thumb) was removed from Thursday's rehab game after being struck by a pitch, per a video posted by writer Matt Bufano.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not immediately clear if Torres experienced some sort of setback with his sprained left thumb, but he did look at his left hand and shake it before immediately walking off the field. His status will be updated again when more information is available.

Gleyber is out for a few weeks with a sprained thumb, but the bigger question is – he's now played almost a full season since the end of 2019.  He's got 9 HR.  Gleyber has increased his walk rate and his KR rate is pretty steady.  He's hitting more grounders and according to Fangraphs, less hard contact.  But, he's still very young. He shouldn't be losing bat speed.  Is he hurt?  Is he distracted by playing bad defense at SS?  What's going on?

Glove continues to be iffy but the bat has come around.

Torres went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI and two runs during Saturday's 7-0 win against the White Sox.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old brought home both runs of Friday's win over Chicago, and he added four more RBI during Saturday's contest. Torres is 21-for-61 (.344 averaged) with two homers, four doubles, 14 RBI and nine runs over his past 16 games.

Embarrassed by the Orioles' catcher on a routine grounder. Severino busts it all the way to first and forces a bad (surprised) throw. The Yankees' catcher, Gary Sanchez, trots to first on a line drive to left that Mountcastle misses.

In an 11-inning game, that's the difference.
