His 5-pitch walk to Arenado right before his 3-run homer to DeJong:

7-pitch walk to Goldschmidt a couple innings later that turned into a run:

A pitcher like Cahill depends on getting his pitch called on the black - if it's not, and he's forced to throw his 85 mph stuff into the middle of the zone (like the cutter that DeJong put over the fence) he's doomed.

FWIW - Flaherty was dealing with a similar zone, which is why he gave up 3 runs to the Pittsburgh lineup in 6 innings.

Cahill did seem to figure the zone out and battled through to the 6th inning where he was lifted after the ump refused to give him the low inside pitch.

Well.....

Mike Landau ML-

He's Trevor Cahill, right?

And who wants to get near that 7.11 ERA?

Well ... it's not as ugly if you look at his 4.63 xERA.  And you don't even need the beer goggles if you scan to the right and see his 3.25 FIP and xFIP.

A .366 BABIP will do that, especially combined with a LOB percentage of 45%.

I picked him up off waivers and plugged him in to face the Cards this week.  We'll see how that goes!

An Old Timey.

Trevor Cahill (P) PIT - Apr. 24

https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=773090

Cahill (1-2) allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out two across six innings to earn the win Saturday against Minnesota.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When Cahill is effective he is able to generate groundballs, and that's exactly what he did against the Twins on Saturday. Eleven of his 18 outs came via groundout, helping him limit Minnesota to only one extra-base hit across his six innings of work. Cahill has alternated solid and horrific outings to begin the season, which has left him with a 7.11 ERA and 19:5 K:BB across four starts. He'll take the mound next Saturday against St. Louis.

Sheldon plans to take Cahill north even if he's not stretched out. I suspect he starts as a 2 or 3 IP opener and then stretches out to 5 or 6 innings by May.
