With the new policy of enforcing the substance rule, I am taking a pause on trading for pitching. There will be some players that have an accelerated regression.  I also think you will see a bump for the good fastball hitters as some pitchers move away from their secondary stuff and with less movement on four seamers. Then again, I could be wrong.

In his 1st start of the year he pitched 6 shutout innings at Colorado then gave up 4 in the 7th, getting 1 Out. Take out that 1/3 of an inning...this is what his season looks like

88 Ks 49 Hits+ walks allowed allowed. One of 44! Starting Pitchers that have more Ks than H+W Allowed right now. 10 of the 44 are at least +25.

Jameson Taillon's road to recovery took him down baseball's new path ... this is long and well worth the read ... could cross post under Taillon (obviously) and Musgrove and Kikuchi and  Shane Beiber, Zach Plesac, and Aaron Civale, and Giolito and Fairbanks and Joe Kelly ... interesting ...

There is something odd about the way Tatis looks down at his feet while Will Smith goes through the signs.

Fred knows that the pace of these auctions is furious, and if you pounce early you get deals as he did throwing out Tatis. When he got Bauer he talked about other times he's ended up with the first two players. I'm sure he was happy at that price. I was targeting Buehler, May and Gonsolin perhaps with some Price. I jumped into spirited bidding for May and won, so I had to sit Gonsolin out. He's the better deal.

Inched his way up to $27 as the second player nominated in today's Tout War.

I'm just tuning in, so it's a guess that whoever nominated Bauer was hoping for a major bidding war, which he didn't get.

I'd be surprised if the owner who bought him, Fed Zinkie, was targeting Bauer. Fred had bought the first player nominated, Tatis Jr., for $38.

He might not have been targeting him either.

The notion that Trevor Bauer's mastery of spin is the scret to his success is born out by the percentiles at Baseball Savant.

His fastball velocity is nothing special. His fastball spin is very special; the best in fact. The spin he puts on his curveball is close to the best.

He was good, not great at keeping batters from barreling the ball.

The average exit velocity was slightly higher than average.

Baseball Savant adds up these purely objective measurements, shakes them in a cocktail, and concludes the expected slugging average against him and expected ERA were both elite. His Cy Young-winning ERA was no fluke.

It's all in the spin.
