He was putting together a nice little season for a journeyman AAA pitcher who spent 4 years in Japan and turned into a valuable relief arm in the majors. Up until last night.  To freeze things as of 9/21, he was 1-1 with a 3.35 ERA and 1.19 WHIP worth $5/$5.

My relief corps in the ADL on August 3, when Patton (nor relation to me or the general) got his first save: Matt Barnes, James Karinchak, Brad Hand, Patton, Paul Fry, Yusmeiro Petit, Louis Head.

Seven pitchers, listed in descending order of saves probability.

Guess how many saves I've had between then and last night, when Patton got his second?

Rotoworld describes last night:

09.01: Spencer Patton recorded his second save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Rockies. (Patton
came on to close things out with the Rangers up 4-3 entering the ninth
inning. He kept things right where they were, rolling through his inning
of work without an issue. He officially closed it on a swinging
strikeout of Garrett Hampton. In 30 appearances this season, veteran
reliever Patton holds a 3.99 ERA and 35/14 K/BB ratio. No great fantasy
shakes, here, though Patton could see another save opportunity or two
coming his way over the final month of the season.)

Gives up lead in ninth
August 11, 2021
Patton allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning and was tagged with a blown save in Tuesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over Seattle.
Patton has been given the ball three times to close out games since the Rangers traded Ian Kennedy and has blown two of those opportunities. Patton fell into the role, as manager Chris Woodward didn't have any attractive options. The manager is not married to Patton as the closer and could use others.

I picked up Barlow three weeks ago, thinking about who would replace Kennedy. Then Barlow barely pitched that week (perhaps because his team never won) and I dropped him, picked up Spencer two weeks ago.

I tried to buy Barlow again this past Monday but lost out.

The long and the short? The everyday closer is going to be Sborz (who was reserved by the team that got Barlow).

Closer Monkey:

Texas Rangers â€” Ian Kennedy is headed to Philadelphia, leaving Spencer Patton, Josh Sborz (when he returns from paternity leave), and Joe Barlow at the head of the Rangers’ pen.

Updated hierarchy: *Patton | Sborz | Barlow.
* = closer-by-committee

Just catching up on baseball after taking the red eye from Seattle... When I saw Peter posting under not-young Spencer and saw the Rangers had taken a pasting in Detroit, I thought, uh-oh.

But Spencer didn't pitch. And the guy he replaced did. My luck continues.

American Dream League Swat Report 7/19/21

If we had a $50 dollar budget there would have been no money bids. At $100 there might have been one. At $1000, well, we see how granularity works.

The first win for the Rangers in the Coliseum since 2016... Is that possible?

That's what the guy in the booth said as this guy pitched an impressive ninth. He would have struck out the side on nine pitches if Tony Kemp hadn't checked on the 0-2 pitch, a slider maybe an inch low.
