Fangraphs Top 5 N.L. offensive WAR: Votto, Pujols, Holliday, C. Gonzalez, Werth.

B-R Top 5 offensive WAR: Pujols, Votto, C. Gonzalez, Holliday, Werth/Zimmerman.

Fangraphs Top 5 N.L. fielding WAR: Torres, Bruce, Bourn, Headley, Pagan.

B-R Top 5 N.L. fielding WAR: Bourn, Pagan, Upton, Y. Molina, Bruce/Parra/B. Ryan/Torres.

The differences in batting WAR are negligible. The differences in fielding WAR are not.

You probably can't base the MVP on WAR entirely, but it's probably more useful than doing what the voters used to do and basing it on HR/RBI alone.

And yet people seem to think the WAR values are indicative of the most valuable player. Isn't that kind of wacky?

They had identical OPS+ of 142 and were both 7th in their respective league. But, Zimmerman's defensive WAR was essentially neutral. That means that Sean Smith's WAR (not B-R.com's as you've called it) is getting some wacky values compared to one's eyes. It doesn't mean their wrong. But, as I mentioned in Longoria's thread, defensive metrics are far from being settled.

Following up on the post I just made under Evan Longoria, I ask the winter faithful: if the folks at Baseball Reference give Longoria the best WAR score in the AL, shouldn't they at least give Ryan Zimmerman (better OPS in 9 fewer games) a close-to-approximate WAR score?

It's not close. Longoria contributed 7.7 Wins Above Replacement, Zimmerman a mere 5.3.

But at least he's finally got a comment!
