Rotowire:

Goes on COVID-19 IL
August 22, 2021
The Rays placed Cruz (illness) on the COVID-19-related injured list Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Cruz was scratched from the lineup ahead of Sunday's series finale with the White Sox due to the illness, and though Tampa Bay has since moved him to the IL, it's unclear whether he tested positive for the coronavirus or is being deactivated as a precaution. Until more information is available, fantasy managers should prepare for Cruz to miss the Rays' entire five-game week, which includes two contests in Philadelphia and three in Baltimore. The Rays called up right-handed reliever Chris Mazza from Triple-A Durham to take Cruz's spot on the active roster.

Rays | Tampa acquires Nelson Cruz

Minnesota Twins OF Nelson Cruz was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, July 22, in exchange for RHP Joe Ryan and RHP Drew Strotman. The Rays will also receive RHP Calvin Faucher in the trade. Source: MLB.com

BHQ take: Cruz will obviously hit in the heart of the lineup for the Rays, just as he had been doing for the Twins. At age 41, Cruz has kept on cranking for the most part, though there is perhaps a little bit of age-related decline (finally!) evident in his power metrics. While Cruz will eat up a a lot of playing time, his arrival won't necessarily fall on any one player.

However, potentially most affected is Yandy Diaz, who has logged plenty of time at third base this season but now may be limited to the weak side of a first-base platoon with Ji-Man Choi, as Tampa does a three-man weave with Wander Franco and Joey Wendle at SS and 3B, respectively, against righties, and Taylor Walls and Franco at SS and 3B against lefties.

Meanwhile, Meadows' playing time should not take a huge hit, but he will have to keep his outfielder's glove handy to a greater degree over the balance of the season. —Kris Olson

Moving over to the Rays. They are never afraid to make trades, whether to go for it or to add future talent.

Colome today, Nelson Cruz yesterday. One year, $13 million.

One million more than he got last year.

It's a free market (so they say). Somebody else could have offered $14 million.

Cutting a month but returning to a 154 game season is going to make for a pretty dense season.

Start looking for 6th starters!

Cruz may wanna hold off on signing just yet.  Today MLB has proposed a 154 game season with full pay for players, a month delay to the season start,  expanded playoffs again, and universal DH.  Sounds good for both sides.

You're only as old as your OPS.

Nelson Cruz (DH) - Jan. 30

Cruz and Minnesota have rekindled contract talks with the possibility of a one-year deal, The Athletic reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cruz has always had interest in returning to Minnesota, but he's been looking for a longer deal and waiting to see if the NL will use the DH in 2021. With it looking less likely that the NL will use the DH again this season, it looks like Minnesota may still be his best fit for 2021.
