Givens has been scored on in only 2 out of 17 appearances and one of those was 3 Runs in 1/3 of an inning when they were already trailing and he hadn't pitched in a week( a loooooooong time for a reliever to go without work).

And there was a period when Hembree was hot as a closer. I don't think you're looking at baseball-reference.com. Givens in Sept has an ERA in Game-Level situations of over 6.00. He's never been a proven closer, or teams would be using him. COLORADO let him go. Think about that. Teams wouldn't use him in clutch situations. The moves the Reds made were not those of a management focused on a World Series crown or even a win in the wild card game, if they even make it.

Givens is 7 for 8 in Save opps...his only blown save he came in with the bases loaded and no one out in the 7th Inning allowing 2 Sac Flies.

Kimbrel is not the issue. The issue is Sims is not a good RP, and the Reds' management did nothing to make them playoff contenders. The pen continues to blow games. They still passed on 5 decent closers, other decent set up pitchers, for 2 guys contenders (NYY) didn't want, and a guy who hasn't closed a game all season who they hope is now their go to guy. Hope doesn't win playoff games.

Kimbrel has had ONE good HALF season since 2019. 0-5 6.00 ERA in 2019 and 20 combined.

Management did nothing to really make this team better. Kimbrel has struggled adjusting to the set up role, which is not surprising. You need to look at SIms' performance in "Game Level" situations on baseballreference.com. 16 hits, 4 HRs, 6.46 ERA in 15 innings in SAVE situations. His ERA in August games that mattered was 6.75. And not much better in no decision situations. The guy cannot pitch when the game matters. That's the point. Hand the ball to Sims in a clutch situation, and expect the worst, as shown on Sunday vs the Cards.

Kimbrel has a 5.68 ERA and 3 Blown Saves for the White Sox while Mychal Givens has 7 Saves and a 1.17 ERA in 15 1/3 IP when he's come in a tie game or to ;protect a lead for the Reds. Luis Cessa has a 1.76 ERA for the Reds....both of those FAR from lackluster. Kimbrel has been the lackluster one.

Still don't know what the Reds see in this guy. Another crushing loss delivered by Sims in a crucial 4-4 tied game with the Cards. Don't think management has a clue about evaluating RPs. And they did nothing to "fix" the Reds for a playoff run at the trade deadline. 3 lackluster RPs while teams like the White Sox nabbed Tepera and Kimbrel, and 5 other closers changed hands. Even Brad Hand would have been a good choice last week.

Lucas Sims continues to be inconsistently consistent... seems to have decent stuff, puts guys on base, tonight allows 3 runs when his job was to handle the anemic Marlins in the 8th. This seems to be who he is. He's not destined for much if he cannot learn how to pitch with a 5 run lead. The shortened 2020 season is looking more and more like an aberration.

I see Sims like I see a lot of other talented, youngish relievers with awesome stuff. He is a guy who may figure pitching out and become a stud closer, or maybe a dude who will try to always strike everyone out and struggle to stay in the majors. Only time will tell.
