I'm not sure what could be worked out to bump the $$'s for a Kevin Pillar, short a minimum payroll for teams.

The luxury tax probably doesn't really affect him - he's not going to be viewed as a key add for a playoff quality team.  There are a lot of teams where he'd add value - he certainly did for the Giants last year - but he's not the player who puts butts into the seats.  And the attitude is "if we're not making the playoffs, or at least a solid run at them, why worry about paying lots of money for a 1.4 WAR player?"

I'm thinking the answer is all that were non-tendered will get less. The process of non-tendering players has to drive down the value of each individually, but because they are then reintroduced into the Free Agent pool, the value of the total also should take a hit. From a business perspective, a smart move. From a we want to see baseball played in 2022....not so much. The PA has to be very upset with what they are seeing.

Non-tendered by the Giants (despite his hot second half).

2019 salary: $5.8 million.

Clearly he would have gotten a big bump in arbitration.

What will he get as a free agent?

A tale of 2 seasons ...
Pre June 12 - 58 games, .219/.250/.357  6 HR, 6 SB
Post June 12 - 60 games, .309/.339/.549 12 HR, 4 SB

Like 2 completely different players.  With his hot second half, he's certainly rewarding any patience his owners showed him!

Had a $4 Souza going into the season ... but fortunately our cut date was opening day, so I was able to let him go before our protect lists were submitted.

Had to spend $14 on Pillar (he was available in our auction the next week)... and have gotten pretty much exactly what I expected from Souza - some pop, some bags, and a crappy BA.

The BABIP obviously isn't going to stay that low ... funny enough, Mr. Popup has his infield fly rate down from the last few years, but his GB rate is up while his LD rate is down.  And he isn't going to be doubling his career HR/FB rate all season ... probably.

But screw sabermetrics and enjoy the ride while it lasts.  Sabermetrics says he's only worth 0.1 WAR so far for the Giants ... my eyes say otherwise.

Where would the Giants be without him?

Pillar will be the main course for PCL in Sunday's FAAB. Although getting a hit between now and then would probably help.

As a Pillar owner and the first ADL owner to benefit from our new rule that traded players' stats count, I can tell you that I would not have bid $12 on Pillar (much less the $14 I did) if I thought I'd lose Pillar's stats if he was traded. He was a big risk if we hadn't changed the rules, but a lot less of one because we did.

No more allowing owners to replace disabled list players or players sent to the minors: "figuring out who will get hurt is part of the game"
