Gossage's ERA+, which Baseball Reference uses to compare a player's ERA to the league ERA (100 means they're the same):

75: 212
76: 91
77: 243
78: 180
79: 155
80: 173
81: 461
82: 178
83: 171

For his career the number is 126.

The problem, of course, is that ERA+ doesn't take into account innings pitched, which is why the strike shortened 1981 doesn't stand as his career year.

I like Retired. Seems to me we enter it ourselves on a case by case basis.

Slyke's right. Goose was even better in 1977 and 1978 (especially if we consider the hitting context, I believe. Does Baseball Reference or any other site show the yearly league totals?).

I changed his current team to Retired, since it doesn't make sense to call him a Mariner at this point. But since there are thousands of thousands of retired guys is there a way to set them all. For instance, guys who haven't played in the majors in since 2004 could probably be called retired, and if they're not we can fix them manually. Or maybe just have the Current Team field be blank unless there is a manual value or a 2007 value.

Deserved indeed. 1977 and 1978 could be the best back-to-back relief seasons ever posted...a dominating presence on the mound.

Welcome to the Hall, Goose. You deserved it. It's unlikely we'll see a stat line like 1975 ever again.
