Good call by Sickels in his top 100 prospects rankings last February.
2) Fernando Tatis Jr., San Diego Padres, (Grade A): Originally signed by White Sox, traded to Padres for James Shields, a trade that will go down in infamy; hit .286/.355/.507 in Double-A at age 19, with 16 homers and 16 steals; you can make a good case for Tatis at No.1 ahead of Vlad; explosive athlete with power, speed; doesn’t have Vlad’s supernatural strike zone judgment but is more athletic and has greater defensive value; ETA 2019.

When he was lost for the season he had already missed 35 games and was hitting .246 over the previous 2 weeks. I think it was still Alonso's to lose regardless.

I think, had he stayed healthy and kept up the pace, we would have had little say other than why did a couple NY writers pick Alonso over Tatis. Everyone else would have gone with the all-around player to the pure power hitter.

Had Tatis not been hurt, we'd really have something to talk about today.
Or not, if Tatis had been able to keep up this pace.

San Diego Padres Future
Yesterday, the Padres announced the firing of manager Andy Green, who leaves San Diego with a 274-366 record over 4 seasons. Rod Barajas will step in as interim manager for the remainder of the season, but whoever takes over will be inheriting a team stocked with young talent. Here's a look at 2019 organizational stats for players who are currently ranked as top 100 prospects by MLB Pipeline or were ranked before the 2019 season.

Fernando Tatis Jr. (back) is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday.
The club had been hopeful that he would be able to return to the lineup after a couple of days of rest, but that no longer appears to be the case. The star rookie shortstop did not travel with the team to Philadelphia and will undergo further tests on his ailing back on Thursday before a final determination is made. Luis Urias will continue to fill in at shortstop in his absence.

With his opposite-field triple in the eighth, Fernando Tatis Jr. extended his hitting streak to 14 games. That’s the longest by a Padres player this season and the longest active mark in the big leagues.
If Tatis gets four plate appearances on Sunday, he will qualify for the Major League leaderboards, and his .324 average should put him in the thick of the race for the National League batting title. He’s 12 points behind Christian Yelich.

Mine too. Peter's too.
We traded him in the PCL in the off-season for...
don't ask.
