Royals Review did a two-part study of Hosmer's bad UZR numbers. Their primary conclusion: especially against LH hitters, Hosmer was positioned too close to the line. It looks like a team positioning issue rather than a bad decision consistently made by Hosmer himself.

As I thumb through Who's Who in Baseball, I'm amazed to see that Hosmer is Ryan Howard huge. Same height, only 20 pounds lighter the last time anyone counted. What do our KC scribes think of Hosmer's nimbleness around the bag? Is that an unfair comparison?

Worse than Ryan, Statue of Liberty, Howard? Ouch. Could it be possible? Of course, you don't hit with your glove, so I'll go to $30 plus if he's going to get double digit steals.

In a recent article about Paul Goldschmidt, writer Dan Strittmatter said:

"Still, I would be remiss to not at least acknowledge the fact that the two worst UZR totals by qualifying first basemen in 2011 came from highly-regarded rookies: Eric Hosmer and Freddie Freeman, who combined for a -19.6 UZR. I don't put much weight in it, but others might and it's at least worth mentioning for those who want to consider those one-year samples as indicative of possible defensive woes."

Was Hosmer that bad?
