A clean ninth (11 pitches, nine for strikes) this afternoon for the save in a 3-2 win over the Red Sox. My guess is the majority 24,000 in the Trop went home unhappy.

With Diego Castillo hitting the IL, Pagan moves back into the ninth inning role for the Rays....for now. Who knows what Cash will do once Jose Alvarado returns, which should be this week.

He's human.

Two homers last night bring his rating all the way up to 0.81.

The .252 BABIP and 34/25/42 G/l/F suggest he's also lucky.

Necessity is the mother of FAAB bids.  With closer chaos rampant in both leagues, largely inspired by the brain trust Tampa, I have no idea what Pagan will "earn" from here on out, but if I had known what the Hackers were going to bid, I would have happily -- gleefully -- bid 37.

In the auction, we know what's left to buy; in season, we don't. I shudder to think where the bidding would have ended on Emilio Pagan if we didn't have sealed bids.

In the American Dreams League. Pagan went for $36 (out of a $100 budget) with seven other bids ranging from $10 to $24 (Alex Patton). Rotoman and I both bid $23.

Now for a serious question -- how many dollars does a Waiver player have to earn to justify spending one-third of your yearly budget on him, as the Hackers did in the ADL?

I'm not sure how you would calculate that. But it seems important in assessing how much to bid for Waiver claims.

He went for $14 in the league I run and I got him for $6 in my other league (won the tie breaker).  I also added Hansel Robles for $5 to go along with Rogers, Peralta, and Kennedy as I try to cobble together competitive saves totals.

We got him, it took $27 of our $200 cap.  The next bid was . . . nobody else bid?  Oy.  Nice duel for Brian McCann, though.

And the winner today in the ADL was --

Kids $10, Nova $12, Tooners $13, Guns $19, Nabons $23, Bad K $23, Moose $24...

Fantastic! What a perfect bid!

Hackers $36

Kicking off today's Closer Chronicles:

April 24, 2019

Tampa Bay Rays – Emilio Pagan picked up his second save in as many days, striking out two of the three hitters he faced in a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Kevin Cash praised Pagan after the game and noted that both Jose Alvarado and Diego Castillo will be available on Wednesday after two straight days of rest.

Updated hierarchy: *Alvarado | Castillo | Pagan.
* = closer-by-committee

Tampa Bay Rays – With Diego Castillo having pitched 2 innings on Sunday and Jose Alvarado coming off a back-to-back, the Rays turned to Emilio Pagan for the save opportunity. Pagan converted, and has only allowed one baserunner through his first five innings this season.

Hierarchy remains: *Alvarado | Castillo | Roe.
* = closer-by-committee
