Pittsburgh Pirates – David Bednar hit the IL tonight with a right oblique strain. Chris Stratton should get the bulk of the save chances for the remainder of the season, as it would be foolish for Bednar to pitch again in 2021.

Updated hierarchy: *Stratton | Shreve | Kuhl.
*=closer-by-committee

I was wondering if Stratton was going to be the guy after Friday's game, when they brought in Bednar to finish the 7th and pitch the 8th.  Stratton got the 3 outs in the 9th to hold onto the 4-0 victory.

So while I hold Bednar in a couple leagues, I'm not sure he will be a lock for all the saves (such as that will be) down the stretch for the Pirates.

Pittsburgh Pirates – The Pirates’ bullpen recorded their first save since Richard Rodriguez was traded at the end of July and it went to David Bednar.  Bednar pitched a scoreless 9th inning, with Chris Stratton getting the 8th inning hold ahead of him.  In Friday night’s 4-0 win, it was Bednar in the 8th and Stratton in the 9th so this looks like it could still be a committee.

Hierarchy remains: *Bednar | Stratton | Shreve.

Continuing with the Monkey's buy/sell picks post All-Star...

Pittsburgh Pirates – The Pirates, perpetually in year 2 of a 5 year rebuild, will be sellers at the deadline again. Their most valuable asset is Richard Rodriguez, who has been a solid closer all year for the Pirates. He has a couple years of arbitration left, but that shouldn’t deter the Pirates form moving him, as they aren’t likely to be contenders in 2022 either. Rodriguez isn’t likely to be a closer on any of the contenders, so his value will take a hit depending on his landing spot. If Rodriguez goes, David Bedner is the first choice to get save chances. Bedner has been a steady hand in the set up role since taking over for Kyle Crick, and makes for a good speculative add.

BUY+: David Bedner; SELL: Richard Rodriguez.

But man ... Rodriguez has been money.  No reason for Pirates to mess with success.

So often spring stats mislead, but maybe not this time.

Pittsburgh Pirates – Kyle Crick landed on the IL, retroactive to May 10, 2021, with a right triceps strain. David Bednar should see additional high-leverage opportunities in Crick’s absence.

Updated hierarchy: Rodriguez | Stratton | Bednar.

Wraps up the Spring with an 18/1 K/BB. I'm thinking he's added a new pitch to his repertoire in the off-season?

Strikes out two of the three batters he faces in the top of the ninth against he Orioles to keep his ERA at zero. I have a feeling Tex is very right about Tout tomorrow.

Well, Shelton said it would be an open competition for the closer job ... and based on the results so far Bednar has been shining.

6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 11 K's

Nary a bid (or reserve pick) in CBS or LABR ... have a feeling that will change with Tout.
