I think this does count as an "option" ... the "alternate training site" is equiv to the minor leagues ... at least that's how the chatter at madfriars.com makes it sound (ex. "oh, we can't send XYZ down because he's out of options and will be claimed by another team")

I'm guessing this doesn't count as one of his options.
Aristides Aquino (OF) CIN - Aug. 03

Aquino was optioned to the Reds' alternate training site Monday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aquino was on the 30-man roster over the past week while the Reds dealt with several absences from their lineup, but he'll head back to develop at the alternate training site. The 26-year-old appeared in five games during his most recent stint in the big leagues, going 2-for-8 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base. He should be one of the Reds' top options to call up if they're in need of assistance again this year.

Payton is a Rule 5 pick, and Aquino has options left, so that could be determinative unless Aquino runs away with it in what's left of the pre-season.

I think it comes down to Payton vs Aquino.

Hit a bomb in Sunday's scrimmage. But does he even make the roster? And if he does, will they even play him? I'm stuck in limbo with this guy. Anybody hear anything? See anything? Read anything? What's going on with him?

$4 in LABR after $9 in LABR and $8 in CBS.
He was slashing .077/.200/.077 in spring training. But it's worth noting, too, that he had swiped three bases.

If he explodes, the clubhouse attendants ain't gonna like cleaning up the mess
Mar 4 '20
If he explodes, you win the league.

Ended up going for 8 in CBS. I just don't see it. First, the performance error bars given his September slump. Second, the battle for playing time in that crowded Cinci OF. Third, the battle just to get onto the Cinci roster as an OF. Fourth, he has options.
OTOH - he is RH ... maybe Alex's speculation of that 26th man being a lefty killer?

CBS NL is holding its auction today. I imagine this guy will be nominated early by someone who has no intention of buying him.
Aristides Aquino (OF) CIN - Feb. 20
https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=737622
Aquino enters spring training without a guaranteed roster spot, and could begin the season in the minors, given that he has options remaining, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "I think they were more focused on not letting him beat them. I think they just pitched him tougher," Reds manager David Bell said.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Aquino's monster August, he really struggled in September, posting a .619 OPS while chasing many more breaking pitches out of the zone. He had a 30.9 K% in September after only striking out 22.6% of the time in August. With the Reds adding Nick Castellanos and Shogo Akiyama to the outfield, Aquino has to beat out Nick Senzel and Jesse Winker for a starting spot, and would otherwise be better suited to playing in the minors every day than sitting on the bench - at least from the Reds perspective.
