Brandon Morrow Chicago Cubs
I think the plan is for him to start the season in the rotation as the 5th starter if he does not implode this spring. Nasty stuff...command is the issue. If he cuts down those walks, there is a lot to like here. Big sleeper in 2008.

Melky Cabrera Pittsburgh Pirates
Players generally make huge strides in their third season. It is especially helpful if they are young when they make it to the majors since the growth curve usually increases until age 27 and then power increases (along with other old player skills until age 31) with speed and defense declining at the same time.

For that reason I'm surprised the Twins weren't interested in Hughes and Melky plus two lesser prospects over the other deals. Hughes has a much higher upside than any other player who they've been offered. And, Melky is poised for a break out. While he can be serviceable in center for the next two years, I see him as a corner outfielder in 3 or 4.

The funny thing is, Ellsbury is seen as a youngster, when he's actually older than Melky by a full year. Melky's growth potential is so much better because he's already two years ahead of Ellsbury at the Major League level. And, Hughes is so far superior to Lester as to be laughable in comparison.

Simply a phenomenal 2007 season. Will probably move to LF once Cameron comes back from suspension...not sure how the position change will affect his play. That being said, I do not see him going lower than $30....he is for real.

I have not been a fan of Melky, but he can help your fantasy team. Melky is the type of OF that you try to get at around $10-$12 this year and hope he improves his stat line from '07 and gets you a $20 season. He is just 23 and has 1,000 MLB AB's under his belt...there is good reason to think he can improve his stats this year. The drop in BB despite the 85 more AB's is concerning, and you hope he can improve on that in '08. No reason to think he can't hit 10-12 HR's and steal 15-18 bases while hitting around .280 this year. $12 seems like the bid here and he should net you some profits.

His Ruthian lefty split cannot be sustained:
.450/.516/.964

Compare that to righty:
.282/.319/.526

Still, he has tremendous bat speed and as long as he stays healthy, should be very productive.

Rafael Soriano Chicago Cubs
Major sleeper going into 08. Health is the only thing that can stop him at this point.

Brandon Morrow Chicago Cubs
Last time I heard the plan is for him to stretch out and compete for the rotation this spring. No knock on Morrow but do you think Bravasi wants a mulligan for picking him over Lincecum?

Filthy stuff but scary wild at times. Was a starter in college--return to the rotation or continued setup?

James Hoey Baltimore Orioles
He allowed 15 runs in 6.7 IP (10 walks) between Aug 22 and Sept 3. AFter that he allowed 1 run in 5.7 innings after that, but walked four, so there is certainly work to be done

Johan Santana Minnesota Twins
Revealed in the package of stories the hopeful New York Times ran about Santana yesterday is that his nickname is El Gocho, a slightly derogatory term for a person from his area of the Andes.

if memory serves...he had a few outings in august where he just got slaughtered. settled down in september, seemed to regain his composure.

Rafael Soriano Chicago Cubs
Very impressive H/9 last year and was rewarded with a 2-year contract. He blew three saves in his 12 opportunities and all came within an 8 day span in July. From that point on he was lights out. Never sure how a set-up guy will respond once given the full-time closer role, but Soriano looks like a pretty safe bet to earn in the upper $20's to low $30's. If you can get him at $24, I would grab him.

Jim Hoey Milwaukee Brewers
This is the same Hoey as James Hoey, only his minor league numbers, which show why he looks like a closer candidate. The crushing increase in walks allowed upon promotion to the big leagues (see James Hoey) is the sign that he wasn't mentally there yet. It's probably prudent for the Orioles not to throw him into the fire.

Rod Barajas Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed a one-year contract with the Blue Jays yesterday. Not too long ago it looked like he was a hitter. A reasonable second catcher for teams that like to go cheap on catchers.

James Hoey Baltimore Orioles
What happened to him at the Major League level? In the minors he had 1.5 K/IP over 45 IP. Somehow at the highest level he lost his knockout punch and is control, since he walked a lot more guys. Could be he was overthrowing, but I never actually watched him pitch.

I just unhid Jim Hoey. Who chances are is James Hoey.

Who else on Kubatco's list shall we unhide?

Boy, they don't make trades like that anymore! Have to go back a ways. Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas. Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio.

Guess Jays are lucky Dodgers turned them down.

Manny Ramirez Boston Red Sox
Yep, Pedroia's already a grizzled vet, complete with thinning hair. Nevertheless, he got an eyeful of the Manny we're worried about, the one that seemed more than a little out of shape last year.
