Carlos Villanueva San Diego Padres
Another guy off to a nice start in his first outing of 2008. His numbers for last year aren't real bad either.

Juan Francisco Tampa Bay Rays
Had four hits, including three doubles, and stole home yesterday in the Florida State League to thoroughly annoy, if not embarrass, the opposing pitcher, Francisco Liriano.

The New York press would go bananas over Barry.

Hey, at least we still have a press!

Vicente Padilla Boston Red Sox
In the ADL last Sunday he lasted until the second round of the reserve draft. But as long as you can push the eject button, there's no reason not to pick him up in the end game.

Unless you like to wait to go the full Monty, I'd throw a few FAAB chips his way.

Just swiped a base. If you're drafting this weekend, that's worth a buck. Or two if you've got Granderson.

George Sherrill Atlanta Braves
For some reason he was thrown back in my league, owner could have kept him for $10. Got me wondering...

What to make of a pitcher with such a schizophrenic scan line? His last start may lure some people in, but he threw 110 pitches, 64 for strikes (finished with 3bb). Just looking at pitchers for the crapshoot in my draft tonight...

Slyke, I drank your Kool Aid. It was only $1 Kool Aid, so how bad can it be?

Should one throw FAAB money here or is it a waste of time and resources? Assuming one doesn't own Putz.

I ended up with Borowski *and* Sherrill (yikes) but at $17 each. The hope, then, if for only one flameout, I guess. If neither does, well, happy day, given that the top tier guys tend to settle in the 30-35 range in my league. Even 10 saves from the flameout guy is enough for a leg up.

Michael Bourn Chicago White Sox
Houston was clearly tooling up to be a running team this year - adding Bourn and Matsui, and in spring Pence was supposedly spending a lot more time practicing basestealing. Which is good - because with that pitching staff, they're going to have to do something exciting to keep fans coming back!

No kidding - I *wish* we'd been auctioning this weekend - that 9 would have ended up at 24. Still waiting on that first start for Volquez ;-)

Actually protected him at 5 in my league ... I'm a big Keppinger fan. See him as a lite version of Wade Boggs, or Tony Gwynn after he slowed down on the basepaths ... but while I think he gives up 20-30 BA points on those guys, he plays middle infield. Showed in the minors that he could get base hits, hitting .333 if you take out his first year with the wooden bats at A ball. He won't have a long peak, but I think he's a player for 2 or 3 years.

Jesse Litsch Toronto Blue Jays
Had him last year, basically due to a rush of pitching injuries, and he wasn't half-bad . . . definitely high up on your sub-$5 list.

Looking forward to seeing what he does these next couple weeks...typical Toronto pitcher with strong command throughout minors, unlikely to dominate.

He wasn't hit exceptionally hard in his debut, which is encouraging since I'd expect his control to improve. He needs to watch that he doesn't pound the zone, as his stuff probably isn't good enough for that, but I think those bid prices were excessively conservative

Very curious what Dusty will do when Gonzalez gets back...a season in line with those career numbers would be pretty nice, and right now he's hitting in the two spot, which makes him gold in 5x5 leagues as long as the BA stays up...

And if Dusty decides he can run, just a little...

Johnny Cueto Chicago White Sox
well, he's virtually unacquirable in trade now. If you haven't auctioned, the bidding is likely to get silly now.

I've loved him since December, but I'll not get to own him before 2009 now.

Hampton did not start tonight as Bennett came in and did alright, but only lasted 4 innings. I would like to see him on a regular turn.

And the self proclaimed experts like me start out by cranking out our own bids over the winter and then looking at Alex's, Peter's, and/or Mike's and adjusting if we feel we should or saying feh and leaving our bid alone. There are several approaches you can take to the bids in the software; the better you know your league, the better off you'll be in recognizing that the bids in the software are a good jumping off point, but by no means the final bids for your league.
