The promising thing is that Volquez followed his dominating K/BB ratio from the spring with an 8K/2BB performance yesterday. If he keeps that up he's going to have a job for awhile.

I was in the same position when he got called out in my league - I immediately passed to avoid being left with the hot potato.

Jason Kendall Kansas City Royals
I've long been waiting for a bit of a breakout from his backup, Mike Rivera ... he's always seemed like the kind of catcher who just up and produces a 15-20 HR season out of the blue one year. While he ain't going to get the PT on the Brewers this year, Kendall caught 150 games/year for 5 years, followed by 140 games/year the last couple. I'm generally pessimistic about catchers surviving that workload injury free into their mid-30's.

Went for $14 in my NL auction yesterday.

Great stuff, good team, but too much to invest for this season.

Bought him at $2 yesterday in my NL auction.

I hope Toz is right that a 2006 season is a possibility.

Went for $2 in my NL auction yesterday.

He was called out at a buck, then an owner bid $2 to price enforce and ended up with him. He cringed when the auctioneer said "sold" at $2.

Wow.

Went for $11 in my NL auction yesterday.

Cueto and Volquez went for a combined $34 in that auction.

That's the same combined price as what Oswalt ($28) and Glavine ($6) went for.

Paying for potential is such a risky play with young, unproven SP's.

Eugenio Velez Los Angeles Dodgers
Went for $18 in my NL auction yesterday.

I called out his name and the owner who was bidding on him needed another speed guy, so I was bidding him up.

If he plays regularly and steals 30-35 bases, that still could be a decent price.

I believe it was $21 in our league (4x4, AL only, 11 teams), which qualifies as restraint these days. Two teams head-to-head, north of $15, back-and-forth. Not sure who felt sicker afterward, the winner or the loser.

Went for $59 in my NL auction yesterday.

The owner who bought him had a solid freeze list and money to spend, so he was committed to doing whatever it took to get him for the speed.

Unfortunately for him, he ended up with little money left to spend on pitching, leaving with with a thin staff.

Johnny Cueto Chicago White Sox
Went for $23 in my NL auction yesterday.

After his start against the D-Backs, I knew I had no shot at him.

Well, I undershot my original guess by a $1...went for $29 in my league.

I needed a power hitting OF at the time and had money to spend, but could not bring myself to go to $30.

Later on, I still needed to spend money and dropped $31 on Damon.

Ugh.

Went for $25 in my auction this weekend.

I pushed to $20 but stopped there.

Jamie Walker Baltimore Orioles
Interesting that the AP projections have him getting some saves -- combination of last year and a slight vote of lack-of-confidence in Sherrill? What the heck; I spent $1 on Walker.

Off his good spring and a good first start, I stretched to $8. Could have been worse.

Amen. I watched the game on NESN. John McDonald was the Julio Lugo Not.

Frank Thomas Chicago White Sox
His lack of speed and seeming lack of enthusiasm does not make him a favorite in Toronto. With his nice hitting yesterday, I heard a few fans disappointed that they didn't have anything to heckle him about yesterday.

Manny Ramirez Boston Red Sox
Was fun to watch Manny taking batting practice yesterday. Cranking giant homers, he seemed to have a bit of a competition going with Ortiz. Was thinking he'd go deep in the game, no luck there, but his stroke looks nice. And after a sensational catch, robbing Big Frank of extra bases, he let out a huge grin. Love seeing someone having fun out there.
