Just lost in arbitration. What do the Yanks know that we don't?

He is going to get bid up as one of the highest rated "closer in waitings". While his peripherals look good, I am worried about that workload...80+ games and nearly 95 innings is a lot for a guy that has been pitching 40 innings per year. He is a guy I know I won't get...and I am ok with that.

Roger Clemens Boston Red Sox
MikeG,

I am very thankful that you continue to stick by your guns and make the defense for Clemens. I look forward to coming home, after a long day's work and being able to read your insight into the situation. There is always at least 1 point that can put a smile on my face(at the very least), or make me burst out laughing as I keep rereading it to make sure I am seeing it correctly.

Tonight it took all of two sentences before the tension of work was gone in an instant. I am still trying to figure out how you can even fathom that "he's made Clemens look good by default." Was it McNamee who taped the conversation with Clemens? Was it McNamee that needed his lawyer's help to answer questions? Was it McNamee that called his former nanny, after 5-6 years of no contact, and invited her to his house to make sure she didn't remember seeing him at a party just days before she was to be interviewed by the committee? Was it McNamee's that could only explain his best friend's testimony (that was backed up by his wife), by saying that he must be "misremembering" and "misheard" the conversation? Was it McNamee's lawyers who said "what a desperate man this shows him to be" when McNamee said that he also injected Mrs. Clemens with HGH? Is it McNamee that is standing behind his wife and saying all the conversations about this stuff with friends was him talking about his wife's usage?

When the syringes come back positive for Steroids, HGH, and Clemens' DNA. I will be patiently waiting for you to write a comment so that I may get another knee-slapping good laugh.

P.S. Did I get Clemens for 2?

Surprised that he will be 32 this December.

I had Saito and Broxton last year for a combined $25 so they did some major damage for me.

So what is the bid value on guys like this? Closer in waiting of course, but a frontline guy in front of him. In the meantime, he does help you in 4x4 leagues just by giving you 75 high quality innings.

You remember the inflation in the NL when you were still in the league...very difficult to set your bid limits. The big name guys go for crazy prices (Pujols $62 last year...) but that leaves for a lot of bargains in the end game.

Kearns is a guy that I can see falling into that bargain bin.

Funny, but Kearns went for $28 in that league last year...and I think I may have bid $26. Ugh.

MikeG,

I think you are wasting your time here. Maybe your time would be better spent on Florida golf courses helping OJ find the real killer(s).

Brandon Jones Milwaukee Brewers
The Braves OF is shaky with Kotsay in CF and Diaz in LF, so there is reason to believe he can make the club with a good spring. The Braves like his power potential.

Sickels has him as his #55 prospect..."not the huge upside of other younger players...but is ready to help now".

Worth a $1 bid if he makes the team.

I have a question for you, Slyke.

I know your N.L. is a 12-team. Do you think that affects your prices? $10 for Kearns sounds like it would be too low to get him in a 13-team format.

I'm not doubting your expertise...I've seen you win leagues before. I'm just curious.

Brad Wilkerson Boston Red Sox
I agree - just look at his last 3 years earnings - and that batting average isn't getting any better and now he's hitting in Seattle - No way I go near $12 on Wilk. He's a train wreck and as you pointed out - Balentin is sitting there in the minors waiting for his opportunity.

Honestly, I would not have gone to $7 on Wilkerson. 116 K's in 320 AB's in 2006 followed by 107 K's in 338 AB's last year is enough to scare me away. Hit .195 away from Arlington last year which should also raise some red flags.

Balentin will be stealing AB's from Wilkerson before the end of May.

Brian Giles San Diego Padres
37 years old, coming off knee surgery and on a steady decline.

Scheduled to return to the lead-off spot, the RBI totals will be low again.

I just don't see him as more than a 4th or 5th OF right now..I think these bids can go down a few ticks.

Chris Duncan St. Louis Cardinals
Yeah, that's right, an .884 OPS and 44 HR's in 665 career AB's.

His season was derailed by a hernia and had an awful 2nd half (5 HR and .209 BA) before having surgery in September.

He is awful against LHP, but pounds the righties, and should be in line for 450 AB's as he is fully healed from his surgery.

$10 could net you a decent profit.

Roger Clemens Boston Red Sox
I don't know if I believe Roger Clemens or not, which I seem to have to keep repeating over and over and over. But Brian McNamee has somehow achieved what should have been impossible at the beginning of all of this: he's made Clemens look good by default.

True about Ryan and Cone, but I was responding to ML's query about Clemens' "unusual" Age 35 season. Given their career trajectories, Ryan and Cone's respective seasons were aberrations based on age expectations versus actual performance.

Vitamin injections have been used as early as the 1940s for certain narrow kinds of treatments. It doesn't make sense to me that Clemens would have been getting injections for the reasons he says he was getting them. On the other hand, did Clemens know right up front that McNamee was lying about his phony doctorate or did he only find that out later? Did McNamee make claims about B-12 that were untrue and back up these claims with his "doctoral" knowledge? I don't know.

I've heard the O.J. Simpson comment at least twice now in this thread. I intended to ignore it, but people insist on bringing it up over and over and over again. So I'll address the O.J. point once and hope this ends the discussion, because this is the only thing that has come up so far in this debate that has gotten me mad.

Assuming Roger Clemens is guilty, he's guilty of using illegal drugs. In no way does that compare to the murder of two human beings. Dragging the memories of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman into this discussion is vile, contemptible, and shameful.

Rick Ankiel New York Mets
Needs a bid...

He is going to get his share of AB's in that OF this year if he can stay healthy.

Very steaky, free swinger, but we saw the power...20-25 HR's is quite possible if he can log 450 AB's.

I'm thinking in the $10 - $12 range.

Mark Teahen Washington Nationals
Unfortunately, I think the real Mark Teahen is more of the 2007 version than the 2006 version. He's a ground ball hitter, and expect him to produce more doubles than HR's .

The BA and double digit steals will keep his value in the $12 - $15 range, but I will pass.

Michael Bourn Chicago White Sox
Needs to improve his OBP, but should be a lock for 35-40 SB playing everyday in CF for the Astros.

The steals potential may make him tough to get at these prices.

Austin Kearns Florida Marlins
.301 BA / .454 SLG on the road

.228 BA / .365 SLG at home.

Move to Nationals Park should help his numbers...maybe his 2006 line is a good gauge.

His value will drop based on his poor 2007, so he could be had at bargain prices. Try to snatch him up for under $10 and hope he responds to this new surroundings.

Josh Willingham Kansas City Royals
Pretty solid bat, and isn't a big name. Willingham is the type of guy I try to get for under $10 and get a profit from.

A $14 bid is in line, but I will set my own personal bid limit at $10.
