Did not distinguish himself at Pawtucket after coming to the Red Sox in the Wily Mo Pena deal. An R3 in the software to help you pick the right Chris Carter in the reserve draft.

I agree with everything you said in the first three paragraphs, though there all sorts of rules and statutes and laws on the books offering various degrees of protection to all the classes you mention below and prosecution to those who violate those protections.

But you're right, this is a baseball thread.

Chris Carter New York Mets
After fine year in slow A with the White Sox, should be on the fast track to the majors with A's, after a brief detour to Arizona in the offseason. (Traded to D'backs straight up for Carlos Quentin, then to A's as part of the package for DanHaren). An R4 in the software.

Just because you work at Langley doesn't make you a "spy." Just because you know spies doesn't make you one, either.

(Few civlians understand the distinction between "covert" and "secret" or between "agent," "operative," and officer." I don't have time to go into them here.)

In 1993, Mir Aimal Kasi drove his car to Langley, opened fire on cars waiting to turn into the CIA parking lot, and killed two employees and wounded three others -- none of them "undercover." Believe it or not, our intel business employs hundreds of thousands of people, very few of them "spies" in the popular sense.

When you choose freely to a) have your husband write an entirely unprovoked article in the New York Times about a mission to Africa that he falsely claimed was undertaken on the vice president's behalf (when in fact it was you, his third wife, who recommended him for the job), b) pose of your own volition for Vanity Fair magazine and c) write a book about your exploits...

guess what --

You're not undercover any more.

In fact, you're actively engaged in a hostile operation against your own government.

But this a baseball thread, so enough about that.

Chad Gaudin Philadelphia Phillies
Went for $3 in Sportsline. One of the most dramatic Post All-Star collapses I've ever seen. Billy Beane says that Gaudin has the best raw stuff on the staff outside of Rich Harden, so maybe Gaudin's worth a flier.

Jeremy Guthrie Washington Nationals
$6 in Sportsline. I was one of those who was chased away. I'd feel better about Guthrie if his only success prior to AAA in 2006 wasn't for Stanford University.

sounds more like a cricket player than a baseball player, but he is quite talented.

Ervin Santana Kansas City Royals
all I know is, based on his splits, he'll never play for the New York Football Giants.

Went for $7 in Sportsline, which I thought was too high. I'm not sure what his role is going to be when the club breaks north (west?): 5th starter, middle reliever, or back to AAA.

Daniel Cabrera Washington Nationals
$5 in Sportsline. 5x5 owners have to hope for around a K/IP and buy someone to offset the WHIP.

John Danks Chicago White Sox
He went for $4 in Sportsline. The thing that gets me nervous about Danks is that he looks like a one-pitch pitcher at the moment who is still working on refining his secondary stuff on the job. He's talented enough to get better, but I don't understand why the White Sox didn't send him back to AAA last year for a little more seasoning. He still might take his lumps this year, talent or no.

He went for $7 in Sportsline. The HR/IP are obviously a concern, but judging by sbud51's first hand review, I'd say that Marcum could be successful.

Jon Lester Washington Nationals
He went for $8 in Sportsline. I remember scouts saying that he rivaled Jon Papelbon in terms of stuff when both were in the minors.

Saw him for one game while I passing through Austin in his senior year. He hit a game winning inside the park homer in the bottom of the tenth. A catcher hitting an inside the parker will make you sit up and notice. I probably should have taken him in our keeper reserve last year and will be looking to correct that mistake this year.

Steve Pearce Boston Red Sox
John Sickels ranks him No. 45 on his Top 100 prospects list, then calls him a "darkhorse Rookie of the Year Candidate."

Reason enough for you to high thee to www.johnsickels.net and buy John's prospect book. Reason enough for me to make Pearce an R1 in the software, which you will be able to buy at www.askrotoman.com on Feb. 24.

For a free preview of the software, which is already loaded with the most accurate 4x4 and 5x5 retrospective prices in the fantasy baseball universe, click on the baseball player on the comments page, the one who looks like he could use a few batting tips.

Joba Chamberlain Cleveland Indians
As a 100 IP reliever figure 2.50/1.10. As a starter go 3.75/1.20. He didn't see much of the league last year and his stuff has been seen before... though not often.

This is the year to stay on the sidelines in redraft leagues but in keeper leagues it's get him now or pay 25% more in another year or two.

He won't be Pedro in 2000, but Pedro in 1993... maybe better.
