Matt Diaz New York Yankees
I Picked him in the Guide. His problem is he's not exactly a supple fielder. But who cares about outfield defense anyway? Well, even neanderthals care when the numbers work against them. I think he'll be just fine if you let him hit, and don't hope for much else. But I won't be surprised if he gets passed by.

Lonnie Smith Baltimore Orioles
This would be basis of a killer (though not bestseller, or even good seller really) book, about the players who held on longest producing dreck.

I suspect Lonnie is a mere contender, and maybe not even a subject.

Stephen Drew Washington Nationals
The Scouts' line, and you may know what I'm talking about, is that he's not that good. May not be much better than his 2007.

I haven't seen him enough to judge that, but there it is. I'd still bid $12 on him. And I'd curse like a longshoreman when he screwed me.

How did Lonnie hang on so long? He couldn't field worth a damn and at the end couldn't run worth a lick.

He won't be cheap, so just make up your mind to spend what it takes.

Mark DeRosa Toronto Blue Jays
He surprised last year by pretty much repeating what he did before. Will do it again.

Ryan Church Pittsburgh Pirates
If he gets off to a bad start, Shea Stadium boo birds will have him crying, "Oh baseball gods, why have you forsaken me?"

Get off to a good start, Ryan, and all is forgiven.

Eric Chavez Arizona Diamondbacks
AB for AB, he cloned 2006. That's what I would bet on.

Robinson Cano New York Mets
What's not to like about Robinson Cano?

"There's a .350-25-110 RBI season in this guy's bat. Just wait and see." -- Rob Blackstein in the Fantasy Baseball Guide 2008

If Cano ever does that, my name is Jonathan Swift. Draw the line in the sand at $25.

Okay, with position scarcity, make it $27.

Miguel Cabrera Detroit Tigers
He's not going to get the home park bump in Detroit that those thinking of freezing him hoped, but on the other hand they have a proven great hitter who has been working out and he's not even 25 years old on opening day. He doesn't run enough to outshine Hanley Ramirez or Carl Crawford, but he's prime among the game's young set. Get on him.

Victor Zambrano Colorado Rockies
I like him. Baseball people aren't stupid. He was a surer think than Kazmir, who had durability issues. And he seemed to be a good fit with Pete Peterson (or is he the gay DoD press guy and I mean Rick Peterson?), whatever, but it didn't work out.

But VZ projects well, which is why the Mets (no dummies) went out and got him. Aggressively, it goes without saying. Thank god I don't have to submit a mixed league bid value.

The trend is obviously negative, and has been for years. Chances are he'll be fighting for a job as an NRI come spring; even if he's impressive during spring training, it says here it will be a mistake to go near him.

Hank Aaron Milwaukee Brewers
Ha, in the other post I mentioned Milwaukee Braves as a team abbreviation. Here it is.

That's why we need the whole list of what's there from Colin.

Only ten wins with a 3.63 ERA? This year the ERA will go up a bit, as will the wins.

The K/IP is something of a concern. Also the fade in September. But because of these, he'll be very cheap.

Hank Aaron Milwaukee Brewers
This is a good example of the need to simplify team names. Instead of ML4, which means nothing except to Databank -- trying to distinguish the various teams that have played in Milwaukee -- we want MIL.

The database that's under the hood here has the answer to that buried somewhere inside, if only you know how to ask the right question.

I have him as $40 in the magazine, tied with Carl Crawford as most expensive outfielders.

A four-year climb in AB, R, H, HR, RBI, BB, BA, OBA & SA. Have to ask Elias if anyone else in history has begun his career that way.

Victor Zambrano Colorado Rockies
The yearly $ earnings in this scan: $8, $4, $0, ($3), ($11)... so when it's all added up, he's earned ($2) in five years. And collected a major league paycheck in all five of them. To Victor: You've been spoiled.

Barry Zito Oakland Athletics
He did have a considerably higher ERA. And still, when you look at his key "interior" stats (hits, walks, home runs), that would seem to be a result of bad luck.
