I'm a fan of the in-season salary cap ... not a fan of trades in general, "dump trades" in particular ... am a fan of the auction (which is salary cap'd vs "free market") ...

As a free market kind of guy (baseball speaking) at best I can say, time will tell. No matter, is what we've got this year so we need to play it out. Makes it interesting.

Noah - probably too soon to tell, since this year will be different than other years, because there are no expiring contracts. Yes, this year it will be harder for all of us to make that deal (believe me, I've already looked). If David Freese at $3 is going to bring me a stud or more, I'm looking at probably minimum $30 increase to my cap. I must choose wisely. I already got a good offer for Freese, but the big salary player that would have been coming back wouldn't have helped in the categories I needed the most, and would have most likely cut me out of a future deal. But, let's say I don't extend Freese next year and he's still playing really well. Then some contender who needs a corner guy will go after a $3 Freese rather than a $44 Votto. But this year those expiring contracts don't exist, so we can't make a judgment on the $325 cap in this the ONLY year when we have a cap and don't have any cheap expiring studs. I'm in first in my other league, and we just instituted a $325 cap this year. I need to replace Luebke and I'm inclined to look at Hanson at $10 (expiring) over someone like Cliff Lee in the 30s. |

So, I had a little spare time and began to contemplate a fire sale. Oops. The new in season (active roster) salary cap of $325 make this much more interesting than last (the first) year. I don't know exactly, but my guess is that most of the contenders' current active salary (for sure those with truly viable, non minor league, keeps (as to price in league context and modestly proven skills) in the average is about $260, give or take (one exception, Yeasts, at $229 but he does not have Harper, Bumgarner types - sorry, Donnie, no offense, nor $1 Jay or Craig types, although Gianacarol at 28 for a one more year is nice and is not like you are trading Stras). Anyway, I think it will be fun to see how the cap plays out in fire sales. For instance, not that either of us is so inclined, but if Geoff traded me Tulo for Cozart, to make that deal I would have to shed all sorts of salary because am at $290 (due to self inflicted wounds in spending FAAB to try to repair horrible pitching choices/luck). And, in doing so (again, not that I have realistic chance of money this year it seems), I would for sure not be improving my team. Seems to me that the cap is likely to (a) chill stars and scrubs priced players being traded for dollar keeps, (b) make it far more difficult to climb the standings via trades (which am sure is fine with many - although I would argue that for those who like the idea of limiting trades, perhaps playing in league where the auction team is it, no trades, etc).), and (c) reduce prices for players at auction (again, maybe a good thing). What do you all think? Is it that $325 is too low? Caps suck? Is perfect? |

IF Latos and Johnson start doing well, that will likely just make up for the regression of my other pitchers who are doing unexpectedly well right now. I'll probably be around 3rd - 5th place, where I've been almost all the time in the PCL. |

I fear where you will be when Latos and Johnson start earning what you spent on them ...

The interesting Palin Comparison season continues, to wit: 1st in HRs and RBI, 2nd in Runs, and yet dead last in batting average at .249 Pitching wins up until May 4th: 7 wins Pitching wins from May 5th - 7th: 7 wins Currently in 3rd place, and plenty of chips to deal in an attempt to win - Headley at $7, Freese at $3, Santana at $6, Zambrano at $4, Venable at $5. Will probably just keep compiling until I see a chink in the Gashouse Gang's armor. (no offense meant if Steve happens to be Asian). Right now no chinks seem to apparent, as he's posting a beautiful 44.5/43.5 split. If I had to guess, it might be unsustainable wins, since Bumgarner, Cueto, and Lohse have combined for 13 of his 19 wins so far. I wonder where I'd be if I hadn't spent most of my auction money on Mat Latos and Josh Johnson. |
