He ended up with 504 AB batting in the leadoff position. And, leading off, he hit .300/.347/.403. So he was a little bit better batting anywhere from second to ninth in the lineup. A little teeny bit. The Red Sox as a team had 702 AB in the leadoff position. And hit .276/.332/.389. Hard to say how many runs they gave up, experimenting with Ellsbury in other places in the lineup. But it obviously was a bunch. |

Francona ultimately listened to me (as a disinterested spectator; I didn't own him) with the result that Ellsbury edged ahead of Crawford by pennies to be the most valuable AL hitter. The two seasons are remarkably similar.

As a Lugo owner, I hope that holds up.

Now (last night) Julio Lugo leading off?

How about 35 points of on base percentage? It's the most relevant stat for top of the order hitters. Drew isn't especially slow, so he's not clogging up the bases either.

Tell me again why Ellsbury is batting seventh and JD Drew is leading off?

Obviously a great Roto play, but the 13 SB mask the fact that Ellsbury is off to a terrible start in real life.

You have a fixed amount of dollars to spend on stats. Ellsbury was worth $31 last year. He'll probably be worth something b/w 25-35 this year. Given that scenario he's an $18-28 profit. In order to win most 12 team AL-only leagues you need a team worth between $330-350 for $260. Mariano is probably worth $30-45. It's a wider range b/c if healthy he'll be at the upper end, but he's starting to get old, so he could have a drop off. He could essentially be a break even player or someone worth a $17 profit. Upton, has been worth a consistent $30 each of the past two years, but that's been with wildly different category valuations. Let's say he puts all of his power and speed together at once. Then, he's probably worth $40, leaving him at break even. But, if he just performs like last year, he's the same player as Ellsbury for $33 more money. I agree, it's a sucker's play. You're getting $70 of stats for $70, something you should be able to do in the auction, or you're getting $30 of stats for $7, something that's nearly impossible in the auction. That said, cash is king at the auction. Don't hold on to it too long, but having it early lets you have the choices as to which big players, if any, you want to buy. Spending it before you get there on Mariano and Upton gives your team shape, but takes other big players off the table. |

Ok, need some help from you (more recently) experienced single league players. Ellsbury at 7 in last year of contract sure looks like a great value play. But, have been offered Mariano at 28 and Upton at 40 both keepable beyond 2009 - seems like sucker's play even though Ellsbury is a one year only guy because I don't think I can find this many runs and steals for this price at the auction. thoughts?
