Walked intentionally twice tonite for 25th time this year and the game is not over yet. Cano is a distant second at 12 times. The 2004 version of Barry Bonds was walked intentionally 120 times. Second place was Ted Williams who was walked intentionally 34 times in 1957.

Well, he is sober. But, he's also 27 (the most common peak age). His BAvg and OBP aren't much different than 2006 in a similar hitting league, but his power is off the charts for him in one of the worst slugging leagues he's ever played.

Cabrera was on pace to have his best season ever, so I'd go along w/ the sober camp on this. His 2nd half has suffered w/ Ordonez going down and pitchers figuring out Boesch. The Tigers opponents have taken the bat out of his hands. Recent examples include walking him despite the fact he represented the winning run late in two games and another game where he was intentionally walked 3x. He is now second in the AL w/ over 70 BBs. A check of the five year scan shows that has never been among his strongest points. But Ordonez and sobriety would have been an MVP season and a career year.

Responding to Heath Bell thread and others:
A colleague and I have been debating about Cabrera all season. I say that a sober Miggy is a better ballplayer than he has ever been. Colleague says, the numbers show Cabrera always has been this good. I say I watched Bobby Bonds drink himself out of baseball with seasons of good numbers. I can't say it's in the numbers but sober Miggy is playing ball. This may turn out to be his best year ever, and among the reasons, I hope, to keep him on his current path away from demon rum.

It hasn't hurt his durability ... yet.

One of the saddest things I ever saw on a ballfield was Mantle appearing stumbling drunk surrounded by kids at an appearance at a Jacksonville Suns game in the late 70s. I suspect he picked up the check and drank it down in the next few days. I heard the remorse too at the end. He had to be thinking folks should be talking about me, not Mays, as the best if I wasn't a lush.

As a Tigers fan I couldn't have been more disappointed in Cabrera. As his owner in my AL league I was happy last year and am looking forward to another big year. He has played too heavy, but it hasn't hurt his durability.

The Commerce Comet was my childhood hero, but as an adult I heard one of his sons say he never played catch or ball with his sons.

Substance abuse, and the damage it does to the abusers and their families, is not a laughing matter. Near the end, Mantle became acutely aware of the devastating effects his reckless behavior had wrought upon his health, his marriage, and his children. His ghost would undoubtedly say, "Grow up, dry up, and be a man."

The ghost of Mickey Mantle says: to hell with the goddamn wagon. Gimme a beer and watch me swat 40.

The drinking does not scare me off at all. He is still just 26...very young and obviously some maturity issues based on his past actions. That said, still just a kid, and the talent cannot be ignored. Drinking and baseball? Hello...I will take him any day.
