I don't usually agree with Mike Francesa, but I remember listening to him back in October 2008 after Jerry Manuel got the interim taken off of his title. Callers were complaining about Manuel. At one point, Francesa explained that, "if you're Omar Minaya, you get one manager. You don't get two."

I tend to agree with that. I certainly agree that the Mets aren't playing good baseball right now. For the last few years, though, you have to wonder how much of this has to do with the man in the dugout and how much of this has to do with the team he's been given to manage. It's hard not to look at the product on the field and wonder what Minaya is thinking at any given moment. The Mets aren't built to win, and given the resources the team theoretically has, it's baffling to say the least.

True enough. But when a team is playing as fundamentally unsound baseball as the Mets are playing, the manager's got to go. The Post has just delayed the inevitable.

The New York Post also wonders aloud if Elena Kagan is a lesbian because she used to play softball. One must take everything they say with a healthy helping of sodium.

The New York Post is calling for Manuel's head. Making it a little bit harder for Wilpon to do what he was about to do.

The Nationals are something like 9-0 in one-run games, which has to be called very lucky. The Mets lost their second consecutive one-run game last night with a star player getting tossed after leaving his bat on his shoulders for strike three with the tying run in scoring position and then complaining about it so emphatically that the home plate umpire had no choice, which has to be called totally boneheaded.

Reyes was cleared today to resume baseball activities after his thyroid levels returned to normal. Five days until Tout Wars NL, to see how he's doing.

Alarm Bells are sounding... Mets track record on medical issues is frightening.

Hm, I might be more bullish, though if you're buying this week more caution (per Peter's post) seems warranted. But, I do think that (1) at least a couple of owners in any given league will be hoping to get a bargain and chase him up, and (2) the cautious prognoses will prove to be pessimistic -- it won't take him that long to get into playing shape, and as a result his season-long numbers won't be affected that much. If you can get him for under $20, go for it, especially in keeper leagues.

More news today. Reyes needs to stabilize his thyroid, which he does by chilling out and eating the right things. It's expected to take two to eight weeks! That's the chilling part. Then he has to get back in shape after not exercising for a month or two, so he's going to miss a month, maybe three, if things go as expected.

I drop him to $17, if you want him, and worth the risk to $9 if you're trying to play it safe. Those numbers can go back up if he actually starts working out in two weeks. Given how long he's been struggling with this, optimism seems foolish.

The prices above reflect general concerns about him, before he was shut down for the testing that revealed the apparently-not-very-serious thyroid condition. Despite what the doctors and Mets are saying, I think the uncertainty knocks his price down further, but someone who plans on taking on risk (because of bad keepers, or a plan to buy injury risks) will push his price into the $20s.

If you're trying to put together a low-risk balanced team, you're not going to get him unless he goes for $12 or so. And he won't.
