Speculation that he might move to the bullpen when he returns from the DL. Way too early to know for sure of course, but it's being mentioned as a possibility.

Smoltz went for $22 in the CBS Sportsline NL 5x5. I have him at $17 on my sheet for 12 team 5x5, so I thought that was a little high. Of course, on the downside, I paid $16 for Wainwright. I think I would still rather have Smoltz.

For a guy with elbow problems since he was 24, this guy is an amazing story. He's still throwing 200 innings of overpowering baseball at the age of 40with little drop-off. And where is Doyle Alexander now? In some old age home, hobbling around his apartment looking for his TV remote so he can watch Smoltzy pitch. He'll earn more than $19, so bid him up to the mid-$20's.

Not counting his rookie 1/3 of a season, the last time he gave up over 1 hit per inning pitched was...well, never. And his worst era, 4.14. Worst whip, 1.28.

Geez. Talk about safety in numbers.

He's had such an interesting career, and the numbers don't quite tell the story. I'd put him in the HOF right now, but I think he will get people off the fence with a couple more solid years. In my mind, you'd always choose Smoltz over Glavine with the game on the line.
