I put my money where my mouth is and paid $22. I love two starting catchers and paired him with Kurt Suzuki for $14. I'm hoping for a major AB advantage at C.

I agree with Gene. And, as Eugene notes, you have a good shot at profit---and I'll add at a position where not many will see profit at all.

Mike, you would not have got him for $16 if you had to bid against me. I think it's a steal, because if he gets hurt he can still play 130 games, and he has a good chance to play 150, now that Gardy is finally DH-ing him and playing him at 1B. Even with little power he can have career highs in production, and he should hit .300+ (without walks for extra juice).

I think his injury proneness is tied to his first season in which he hurt his knee (meniscus I think) diving for a ball in his 15th game. Since then, as Toz references, he's been pretty solid. Sure, in 2009 he missed the first month. But, whatever. A full-time catcher can be counted on for 5 games a week. That's 130 games a year. He's been there 3 of 4 years. I have him at $17 with 450 ABs. If he has only 300 again, well, he's worth $11 and you take a small loss. If he's healthy and plays 130+ games again, then he's worth $22 and you get a nice win. Both are within the range of reasonableness. Both are a lot better than the chances of Carlos Santana or Matt Wieters earning a profit at $26.

The one upshot, Mike, is the average. Even assuming a year like 2007, a .293 average is nothing to sneeze at. .327 or .328, well, that is a different ballgame. I didn't have any problem with $16, though he is likely (on offense) one of the lowest "value" margins on your team.

I got him for $16 in CBS. Probably my most criticized buy. I agree with Slyke that the realistic hope is 2008 or 2010. 2009 looks like a pipe dream now. He has averaged 120+ games a season over the last five years. He certainly was "injury prone" last year, but tagging him as perpetually injury prone is somewhat misleading. |

In the Fantasy Guide I have him priced at $22, and have had some long discussions about that since. I think he's more of an injury risk than I gave him discredit for when I made the number, so I agree with Slyke that $22 is his projected value. All risk is downside. I don't think we have enough info to get a real idea of his health. I'd pay $20 for him today, but I will admit that's a little reckless. But if he overcomes he's a $35 catcher. That's gold. |

Except for his 1987 Wade Boggs impersonation he consistently earns more in 5x5 than 4x4. Low HR and SB and high average and high ABs yielding strong RBI and Runs are the formula.

I think best case scenario is he returns to his 2010 level of production. With the injuries, ballpark and weak line-up he's in, I don't see that happening. Signing Doumit will help a little, but not enough. I think his bid limits should be half what they were going into last season.
