Rotoman's last comment is such a great one. Sometimes the last few money hoarders attack separate markets and make out like bandits; other times they chase the same cars and feel screwed by timing. When I'm one of the holdouts, I'm just praying I have different ink on different names than the other fat wallets. And there's nothing more enjoyable than seeing endgame (and pre-endgame) inflation at play when you're not the guy cutting the check.

Back to Shields, he's still a little too popular for my 2008 plan.

The Ray's improved defense suggest the Shields buyers aren't insane. (The Tigers' worse defense suggest the Verlander buyers might be.)

It just takes two teams with the same hunch at the right time for nuttiness to happen. Shields earned it last year, when he cost $7, which means it's not crazy. Even if it is nutty.

I love James Shields but I'd never pay $25 for him in a non-keeper draft. Verlander went for $26 and I have him as the class of the AL this year. Every year there are some favorites and values in every league. As long as you trust your own values and get a few of what you believe are bargains among some of your stars, it's a good draft. Of course your values have to be based upon rational projections, not hopes and dreams, but with all those givens, a projected profit is a projected profit and Shields is not that this year in LABR.

Went for $25 in LABR. That's ace money for a guy I don't see as an ace.
