He sucked sucked sucked early last year, too, and didn't lose his job, but there's an obvious good case for resting him against lefties at least. It's hard to be excited about him, his trend is certainly down.

That giant sucking sound is James Loney's value for 2012 going down the tubes, as the Dodgers start.

The breakout may have to wait ... I think that Loney will still get ABs against RHP (he has a .385 OPS against LHP this year) but it would not surprise me to only see him on the field 2-3 times a week until he turns it around in a big way.

I'd have been tempted at that price, just because our league aggressively bids SBs, and I couldn't see him not getting enough PT in Houston to duplicate last year's SB totals.

If JD Martinez slumps - Houston could have the worst offensive OF I've ever seen at the MLB level for a team not decimated by injuries.

Yes, didnt see Bourgeois as a keeper at $10, would you keep him at that price, Tex?

So Bourgeous is gone, and Loney is back in the player pool.

Thanks, Peter, but after a more careful weigh-in of my keeper list I released him, plus a slew of others. As Lennon said, "It'll be just like starting over".

If I were going to compare Loney to someone that had a breakout HR year at age 27 it would be Dave Justice. That's who his swing has always reminded me of anyway.

Let's see Loney go sleeveless like Big Klu did and the difference will be obvious.

Good. I get Loney cheaper.

Actually, have to agree. The careers look similar, but Kluszewski hit 74 homers in 681 games (with 145 doubles). Loney has hit 67 homers in 782 games (with 155 doubles). Hmmm.

Big Klu: 219 HR+2B
Loney: 222 HR+2B but 101 more games played

Also Big Klu's Big Year came after they brought the right field fence at Crosley in by 24 feet. They aren't bringing in the fences at Chavez Ravine.

But you guys are sourpusses. I was just trying to make the Gypsy feel good. And I expect I'll be getting Loney cheap. All the better.
