He is a great fit if you want a safe place to plunk down your $30. I think there is a reasonable chance of him only earning $25, but that is still a solid amount of stats.
Guys like Atkins are the constants on your team, which you need while you mine for value other places. |

Why am I so low? I figure you have two ways to go on Atkins. You can think 2006 was his base year and last year was a down year, or you can think that 2007 was his base year and 2006 was his career year. Given his late arrival in the majors, and the sort of thick body I see when I watch him, I'm inclined to pessimism. It's not that I think he stinks or has terrible flaws. He's a fine player with a good approach and good results. I just don't think he's a great player, a steady $30+ performer. In a mixed league, that makes him sort of average (though statistically he's better than average) and not someone to bid up too much. But if you want him you're going to have to go a good ways anyways. That's where I tried to set my price. That's all. |

In the final draft-ready version of the software that is posted now at AskRotoman.com (click on Old Timey on the comments page), I gave Atkins a $1 raise. Can't remember why exactly, but in making the bids add up precisely to standard 4x4 NL Rotisserie league budgets (without inflation), that's how he ended up. Other values in the software for Garret Atkins: $ 26 (the value in 4x4 of Rotomans's 2008 projected stats), MF5 23 (Mike's 5x5 bid limit), PKm 17 (Peter's approximate bid limit in mixed leagues), Lg 1 30 (price paid for him in this year's LABR NL auction, a new column that's just been added), '07 27, '06 35, '05 (4x4 earnings in the last three seasons that you see in the table here). The column called Bid is blank. The way the software works is, you select any of the columns described above as your starting point, switch them over to Bid via transfer values, enter the freeze prices in your league, and and start adjusting bids of available players until the totals add up to your league budget. Simple as that. There may be better auction manager products out there -- correct that: there are -- but nothing else matches us for such a gold mine of information in concise format, nor does anyone else match us in ease of customizing prices for your own auction, which is the key. By the way, if you're in a 5x5 league, you'll see $24, not $26, for the value of the identical projected stats. Why? Because 5x5 is the great leveler. This is the sort of thing we at Patton & Co understand and the majority of the competition doesn't. Mike and I have a difference of opinion on what to bid for Garrett Atkins this year. But it's not that big. Here's what I suggest you right in the Memo field: "Why is PKm so low?" Maybe he'll answer here. |

Atkins wasn't alone in the doubles department. Coors had the highest index (123) for doubles in the National League last year. Also the highest triples index (253) by far. Coors had the third highest HR index (119), after Citizens Bank (145) and Great American (133). Coors had the highest batting average index (110). And for all that, Wrigley Field had the highest runs index (117, a point higher than Coors). Something to ponder over a beer. Or while chewing gum. Not both. |

$31 in CBS. I had him on the sheet for $26; the lack of third basemen just really gives me cause for concern. Note that, despite the humidor, Atkins is still a Coors producer - his average is 90 points higher and his SLG 60 points higher at home. Oddly, though, those are mostly doubles, since he hit 15 HR on the road. |
