Alex, I don't think anyone in the sabermetric community would say that defensive metrics are settled or definitive. All of them are rough estimates that aren't very good, but are all much better than fielding percentage, which is virtually worthless. |

Fangraphs gives Longoria and Jose Bautista the identical number of Wins Above Replacement, 6.9. Baseball Reference gives Longoria 7.7 Wins Above Replacement (the most in the AL) and Bautista 5.6. Clearly, if we're to take these numbers seriously, one or the other system comes closer to approximating reality, but which one? Baseball Reference gives more weight to a player's defensive contribution; there can be little doubt about that. But Baseball Reference gives Robinson Cano a WAR score of 6.1. Cano, in their estimation, is closer to Bautista than he is to Longoria. Does that mean that Baseball Reference's defensive metrics find that Cano was a bit of a slacker in the field this year? If so, they're wrong. |

With a week to go (it's close enough that a week could tip the scales), my vote goes to Bautista.

Longoria's more worthy than Cabrera, but I think Hamilton's still the guy.

There's not too much talk about the AL MVP on this board, but for my money it's Longoria. He's not hitting the HR that people like to see, but he's been great offensively and the top defensive 3B in the AL. I don't think he'll win it, unless the SABR vote is out in full force. But, for my money, he's the guy. It will be hard for him to overcome popular sentiment for Cabrera, Cano, and Hamilton, though. And, Bautista is making some case with his power. Unreal. |

Everyone has gotten their wish for Longoria. He's running more this year, but he has been caught stealing twice! He's also boosted his BAvg considerably, but I don't know if he can keep it up. His .373 BABIP is 60 points higher it normally is. The great news is his K/BB and ISO are right no par for normal so the production will continue even if the BAVG drops. Sample size and all, but his FB% hasn't changed, yet he's hitting a few more out of the park. He has added infield hits and lost some GB for LD, but those stats, as we know, are prone to massive reporting errors. |

Bill Hall. I'll get it right before he retires. Don't have much time. I agree that Dom Orsillo (whose name, yes, eluded me) is a complete sound-alike with Sean McDonough. I listen to a lot of Red Sox games on the radio in the summer, after the sun goes down, and nothing could be more soothing. Among their virtues, Orsillo and Remy aren't afraid of silence. For extended periods you hear just the sounds of the stadium. |

It's refreshing after jokers like Hawk.

Dom Orsillo is the NESN play-by-play man and he's good (though I preferred sound-alike Sean McDonough in that chair). And Orsillo and Jerry Remy are excellent together; I love Remy. The call it as they see it, not homers at all.

It would be very cool if Mel Hall was playing for the Red Sox at his age. Bill Hall.
