Alex, I assume you own Willy, as you suggested you would pick him as a placeholder for Longoria back in spring training. Willy has been ok, w some power, not a bad pick at a buck if you could hold on during the summer. Still, your best pick was Alexei Ramirez (in the software) and reason enough to buy Alex Patton in 09.

His brother Willy (who is not in the database because he didn't play in the majors or minors last year) got a big clutch hit last night against the Angels, in front of 15,902 mostly Rays fans. Tonight, as the Rays try to sweep -- against the Angels -- maybe they can draw 16,000.

I'm trying to imagine the 20 situations that called for Aybar to come to the plate as a pinch hitter.

I tend to agree that the Angels aren't going to futz around with Brandon Wood at SS, so Erick Aybar probably has about two months or so to hang himself at the position. He was terrible last year, but it's not all that rare for young players to struggle when pressed into a bench role. What concerns me more is that Aybar didn't crack an 800 OPS in either Double-A in 2005 or Triple-A in 2006. To some degree, you can make the argument that he was young for those levels, but you do want to see more production out of your minor leaguers. He is a risky play, but the speed and the potential for 20-30 SB means someone will make it.

He's having a bad winter, too, in the DR, and he's got Maicer Izturis behind him (next to him?), as well as Wood. The odds of him being the full time SS this year are way small.
