He went for exactly $12 in Sportsline. It's a bid I'd make in a freeze league if I had a weak freeze list (like I do in my A.L. this year) and needed to gamble, but in a non-freeze league like Sportsline I probably would have taken him down a couple of ticks.

You won't get Dontrelle for the 4x4 price, but Alex, once again, is on the money. This is why the scan is useful. Dontrelle has a reputation as a money pitcher, but the money column tells us, in fact, that he's only been that pitcher once in the last five years. Pay $12 and hope for 2003, deal with it if you get 2004 or 2006, and pray he doesn't re-live 2007.

"To be honest," concludes the Baseball Forecaster in its Dontrelle Willis comment, " xERA has never been all that impressive anyway."

Maybe not, but a 4.52 xERA in 2007 is a whole lot better than the ERA that counted in the standings; with a few more wins, he might have actually been worth something.

While Comerica Park is less of a pitchers' paradise than it's thought to be, Dontrelle figures to benefit from pitching on a team that plans to win some games, to hitters that for the most part have never seen him.
